AFRICAN KUDU (WILD ANTELOPE)
Kudu leather is traditionally used for footwear and garments due to its hard wearing and durable surface. Most leathers with these properties tend to be firm and dense while kudu is uniquely soft with a natural stretch. This property makes the kudu very comfortable for clothing giving products a natural worn in feel despite being new.
Kudu skins are sourced from a seasonal cull mandated by the South African government. Controlled culling aims to manage overpopulation while also providing income to local communities. The meats and horns are sold in local markets while skins are sourced as a byproduct of the hunt. A controlled practice allows for sustainable sourcing with minimal waste.
There are two different styles of kudu available, waxed and nubuck. Due to them being wild animals, there will be natural marks and scars present throughout the hide. Blemishes and character are much more prominent on the lighter coloured skins. Colour availability are seasonal and will change from time to time.
Tannery: Chares F. Stead & Co (United Kingdom).
Temper: Soft with a stretchy tensile structure.
Surface: Waxed kudu is very responsive to wear. Good recovery against mild scratches.
Tanning: Chrome tanned.
Patina: Responsive to wear and will patina moderately quick. Waxed kudu will develop natural sheen over time.
Other notes: Character varies greatly around the hide. Lots of natural marks and characters. Excellent structural durability but is very responsive to marks and wear. Waxed kudu has slight pull up effect.
